Argos expansion brings extra sales jobs to Birmingham

Up to 52 sales jobs have been created in Birmingham after retail store Argos expanded its operations.

The popular superstore has moved into a larger unit at the One Stop shopping centre in Perry Barr.

New sales jobs, which include seasonal work over the festive period, will come as a boost to the area after unemployment rose to 10.5 per cent in the West Midlands, higher than any other region in the UK.

Deborah Jones, manager of the store, told the Birmingham Post that the new development was an exciting prospect for the business.

She added: "Equipped with a team of highly-trained and motivated sales staff, the store will provide a full and thorough service to locals. We are also looking forward to getting involved with schools in the area and wider community in the upcoming months."

Argos now has 690 stores in the UK and had an annual turnover of £4.3 billion last year.

Prime minister Gordon Brown recently promised to do more to help Birmingham's young unemployed when announcing a scheme to help 45,000 people find jobs in retail sales, tourism, leisure and hospitality.
